How Long Is a PsyD Program? Time to Degree
How long is a PsyD program? The typical ranked program reports about 5.0 years from entry to degree, internship year included. APA’s standards set the floor: “a minimum of 3 full-time academic years of graduate study (or the equivalent thereof) plus an internship prior to receiving the doctoral degree.” Among the 108 ranked programs whose APA disclosures report time to completion, 90 report a typical graduate finishing in 5 years or fewer and 106 in 6 years or fewer.
How Long Is a PsyD Program at a Glance
- APA’s floor is three academic years plus an internship. “a minimum of 3 full-time academic years of graduate study (or the equivalent thereof) plus an internship.”
- The median ranked program reports 5.0 years to the degree. That is across 108 programs, from each program’s own APA disclosure.
- 106 of 108 report 6 years or fewer. 90 report 5 years or fewer.
- The internship is a year of its own. APA requires “a 1-year full-time or 2-year part-time internship.”
- The degree is not the license. ASPPB describes “3,000 to 6,000 hours of supervised professional experience” depending on the state, territory or province, with pre- and post-doctoral hours counted.

How Long Is a PsyD Program Under APA Standards
APA sets a minimum and leaves the rest to each program. The accreditation standards require “a minimum of 3 full-time academic years of graduate study (or the equivalent thereof) plus an internship prior to receiving the doctoral degree,” and the program must show that “all students complete a 1-year full-time or 2-year part-time internship.” Residency fills part of the academic years: “at least 2 of the 3 academic training years (or the equivalent thereof) within the program from which the doctoral degree is granted,” with at least one of them in full-time residence.
The internship itself has a length. APA’s standard for accredited internships says “Accredited internships may be structured as full-time or part-time.” It also says “The program requires interns to have the equivalent of 1 year of full-time training to be completed in no fewer than 12 months (or 10 months for school psychology internships).”
“Most doctoral degrees take 5–7 years to complete. Some institutions require their students to complete their doctoral studies within 10 years of admission to the institution.”
APA, Psychology Careers Guide, 2008
That 2008 figure covers doctoral degrees in psychology generally, not PsyD programs alone, so the disclosure figures below are the better guide for a PsyD.
How Long a PsyD Program Takes According to Disclosures
Each APA-accredited program publishes the number of years its graduates took, in a table for all students entering the program. This site reads the median years from that table for the 108 ranked programs whose disclosures it has read and takes each program’s typical time as the median of its yearly figures. The median program’s typical time is 5.0 years. Of the 108, 90 report 5 years or fewer and 106 report 6 years or fewer. The disclosures also print a mean, and the median of those mean figures across the same programs is 5.1 years.
How Long a PsyD Program Takes, School by School
Schools describe their own sequences in their own words, so the statements differ in what they count: some include the internship year in the total and some add it. The table gives each school’s statement beside the median years its APA disclosure reports, for the 25 highest-ranked programs that print both. Where a program is accredited with an exception, APA’s exact status is shown under its name.

What Fills the Years of a PsyD Program
A PsyD program spends its years on four kinds of work, and the length of a PsyD program is the sum of them.
- Coursework and residency. The academic years carry the program’s curriculum and APA’s residency requirement above.
- Practicum. APA requires that “Practicum must include supervised experience working with diverse individuals with a variety of presenting problems, diagnoses, and issues.”
- Examination and dissertation. APA’s student network says that “Most programs require students to write a thesis or dissertation,” and APA’s 2008 careers guide adds that “you must pass a comprehensive exam and write and defend a dissertation or other scholarly product.”
- Internship. One year full time or two years part time, before the degree is conferred.
After the Degree: Supervised Hours and Licensure
The degree is the end of the program and not of the path to a license. ASPPB lays out the order: “both countries require an academic program that includes a practicum, an internship, and graduation.” It adds that, depending on the jurisdiction, there may be “3,000 to 6,000 hours of supervised professional experience, including pre- and post-doctoral hours.” “Most graduates of doctoral programs enter postdoctoral training,” APA says. The licensure guide gives the hours each state counts and the EPPP guide covers the exam.
Questions About How Long a PsyD Takes
How Long Is a PsyD Program in Years?
The median ranked program reports 5.0 years from entry to degree, internship year included, with 106 of 108 at 6 years or fewer. APA’s standards require “a minimum of 3 full-time academic years of graduate study (or the equivalent thereof) plus an internship.” Each school’s own statement of its length is in the table above.
Does a PsyD Program Count the Internship Year?
Yes. APA’s standard is academic years “plus an internship prior to receiving the doctoral degree,” so the internship comes before the degree is conferred. The standard is one year full-time or two years part-time, and an accredited internship “may be structured as full-time or part-time.” See the APPIC internship guide.
How Is Time to Completion Measured for a PsyD Program?
Each APA-accredited program publishes a table of time to completion for all students entering the program. The columns are the years degrees were conferred, and the rows give the number of graduates and the mean and median years to complete the program. This site takes a program’s typical time as the median of its yearly median figures and does not read the “Total” column as a year.
How Long Does It Take to Become a Licensed Psychologist After a PsyD?
That depends on the state’s supervised-experience rule. ASPPB says that “Depending on the jurisdiction, post-doctoral experience may be required or not.” “Most graduates of doctoral programs enter postdoctoral training,” APA notes, before a first job or private practice. The licensure guide sets out the hours in 33 states.
Can You Take a PsyD Program Part Time?
Some programs state a part-time option, and the part-time PsyD programs page lists them. APA’s residency standard still applies: “at least 2 of the 3 academic training years (or the equivalent thereof) within the program from which the doctoral degree is granted,” with at least one year in full-time residence.
