Midwestern University's Glendale, Arizona, Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology follows a practitioner-scholar model and gives broad and general training in clinical psychology at a healthcare university, where students work alongside other health professions through research forums and community outreach. The program is designed to be completed in four years: full-time students take three years of coursework while completing a two-quarter clerkship, which starts in the winter quarter of the first year, and two years of practicum, 16 to 24 hours a week at a program-approved field site with an on-campus seminar, followed by a 2,000-hour predoctoral internship over 12 months full time or 24 months part time. Students pass a comprehensive examination and a qualifying examination, which marks entry into doctoral candidacy, and, under a faculty committee's guidance, defend a dissertation proposal and later present an oral defense of the finished project. A five-year plan adds a year of practicum, and the optional five-year Neuropsychology and Health Psychology concentrations add coursework, practica at specialty sites and a dissertation in the area; students apply to either concentration in their first year.

Applicants need a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 and 18 semester hours of prerequisite psychology coursework with grades of B- or better; GRE general test scores are optional. Qualified applicants are invited to group interviews with faculty, staff and students, and the program has a priority application deadline of December 10 and a standard deadline of March 31, with later applications considered on a rolling basis. Practicum sites include 100 field placements in the greater Phoenix, Arizona, area, among them medical centers, psychiatric and veterans hospitals, prisons and other forensic settings, and the Midwestern University Multispecialty Clinic. Up to 40 quarter hours of earlier graduate coursework may be considered for transfer credit, though never for practicum or internship, and the school says graduates of the designated program typically meet the jurisdictional educational requirements for licensing; licensure itself is granted by each state's board.

  • The curriculum totals 220 quarter credits.
  • The standard plan takes four years, with the internship in the fourth year.
  • Optional five-year concentrations cover neuropsychology and health psychology.
  • GRE general test scores are optional.
  • Priority applications are due December 10, and the standard deadline is March 31.

Which Is the Best PsyD Program in Arizona?

In the 2027 ranking, Midwestern University, Glendale in Glendale, Arizona is first among the PsyD programs in Arizona, with a score of 64.6 out of 100 and 25th place nationally. Its program page is Midwestern University, Glendale (doctorate page for the Clinical Psychology Psy.D. program). The score weighs cost, graduate earnings, completion, internship and licensure outcomes, track record, credential alignment and program reputation, and the methodology page shows each weight.

Does Arizona Require an APA-Accredited PsyD?

No. The statute writes its own program standards, and a degree from a program accredited by APA or PCSAS at graduation counts as meeting most of them. The board’s guide for new applicants adds that the doctorate has to be in clinical, counseling, educational or school psychology, with forensic psychology the one other field it has approved.

Can Practicum Hours Count Toward Arizona Licensure?

Yes, up to 1,500 of them. Arizona wants 3,000 supervised hours with at least 1,500 in an internship, and the rest can be supervised preinternship work, more internship hours or postdoctoral experience. Preinternship hours need a written training plan agreed with the graduate program, and they have to be finished within 72 months.

Which Exam Does an Arizona Psychologist Take?

The EPPP. The statute sets the pass mark at 70% on the written exam or a scaled 500 on the computer-based one, and the board’s EPPP resources page lets doctoral students apply as soon as their coursework is done.
