PsyD Tuition by Program: Published Prices and Periods

PsyD tuition is not printed the same way twice: one program gives a yearly figure, another a price per semester or per quarter. This post counts the PsyD tuition that 104 ranked programs print, groups the figures by the period each school prints them for, and gives medians by type of school.

PsyD tuition adds up: hundred-dollar bills fanned out beside a spiral notebook of handwritten monthly figures, with a calculator and coins at the top of the desk.

PsyD Tuition by Program at a Glance

  • 104 ranked programs print a tuition figure. Each is shown the way the school printed it, with the period it printed it for.
  • The median yearly figure is $39,879. That is across the 99 programs that print a yearly cost, the figure APA’s disclosure table asks for.
  • Public and private programs differ. The median yearly figure is $25,506 for 18 public programs and $41,492 for 74 private nonprofit programs.
  • Prices per semester are not converted here. A price printed for one period is never shown as a yearly price. The first section explains how the figures are grouped.

How PsyD Tuition Is Printed in an APA Disclosure

APA requires every accredited program to post a cost table for its incoming class, and each school fills it in its own way. The figures here come from the 104 ranked programs whose pages give tuition for the incoming class: 100 of them as the out-of-state row of the table, which is the row used where a public university lists two prices. 99 print a yearly figure, and 5 print the price of a shorter period.

The table groups the figures by the period the school printed. A median is shown only for a group of three or more programs, because the middle of two figures says little. The PsyD tuition counted for scoring is different: the methodology page says how a price per semester is turned into a yearly one for the Cost factor, and no program’s card shows that total as the school’s own price. The median yearly figure in this post uses only the yearly figures programs print, so it differs from the one in the PsyD guides, which count a per-semester or per-quarter price over the terms in a year.

Ranked PsyD programs by the period their tuition figure is printed for
How the figure is printed Programs Median figure
A yearly figure (the first-year cohort cost, or a price per year) 99 $39,879
A price per semester 5 $23,040

Median PsyD Tuition by Type of School

Type of school is the clearest line through the yearly figures. These medians are of the yearly figures only, so a price per semester never enters them, and a group appears only when it holds three or more programs. The public median is $25,506 and the private nonprofit median is $41,492. The table rows add to 98 of the 99 yearly figures: 1 program is left out because no type of school is on file for it or its type has fewer than three programs.

Public 18 $25,506
Private for-profit 6 $45,363

PsyD Tuition Price Bands

Grouped by price, the 99 yearly figures fall into these bands. A band is a way to see how the PsyD tuition spreads, not a ranking of programs; for programs side by side, see the lowest-tuition list.

Under $20,000 8

What PsyD Tuition Leaves Out

A tuition figure is the price of instruction and nothing else. Fees, books and living costs are shown on each program where the school publishes them, and the ranking does not score them. Aid changes what a student pays, and it does not change the printed price: the ranking counts a program’s tuition as lower only when the school states that it waives tuition for every admitted student.

What students borrow is a separate figure. APA’s graduate-school FAQ reports: “In 2016 the APA conducted a survey of individuals that had completed master’s or doctoral degrees in psychology in the past 10 years.” It adds: “Those who received PhDs had, on average, $78,000 in debt, and those who received PsyD had $146,000 in debt.” That is a 2016 survey, so it is a dated figure. APPIC’s 2023 survey of internship applicants, who include PhD and PsyD students, found median reported debt of $50,000, and $60,000 for applicants at U.S. schools, and a mean internship stipend of $35,478 at U.S. sites.

Questions About PsyD Tuition by Program

How Much Does PsyD Tuition Cost per Year?

Among the 99 ranked programs that print a yearly figure, the median is $39,879. 8 programs print under $20,000; 44 programs print $20,000 to $39,999; 34 programs print $40,000 to $59,999; 13 programs print $60,000 or more. Per-semester, per-quarter and per-term prices are counted separately, never converted into a yearly price here.

Is PsyD Tuition Lower at a Public University?

Yes, in these figures. The median yearly figure is $25,506 across 18 public programs and $41,492 across 74 private nonprofit programs. Where a public university lists two prices, the out-of-state price is the one counted.

Why Do Some PsyD Programs Print Tuition per Semester?

APA’s disclosure table asks for the incoming cohort’s yearly cost, and many programs print exactly that. Others print the price of one semester, quarter or trimester, and this page shows it that way. The ranking method counts a semester price at two semesters a year unless the program states otherwise, and says so on the methodology page.

How Much Debt Do PsyD Graduates Report?

APA’s graduate-school FAQ reports: “In 2016 the APA conducted a survey of individuals that had completed master’s or doctoral degrees in psychology in the past 10 years.” It adds: “Those who received PhDs had, on average, $78,000 in debt, and those who received PsyD had $146,000 in debt.” That survey is from 2016, so read it as a dated figure, not a current one. APPIC’s 2023 survey of internship applicants, PhD and PsyD together, reported median debt of $50,000 for all applicants and $60,000 for U.S. applicants.
