The Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in School Psychology follows a practitioner-scientist model and prepares psychologists to practice in schools and other child and family settings. The 122-credit program runs at least four years: three years of full-time coursework and practica, including approximately 800 hours of supervised practical experience, then a year-long, full-time internship worth 18 credits. First-year students spend one day a week in a local public school, second-year students train in the on-campus Child and Family Services Center, and third-year students take individually designed practicum placements. Research training begins with a first-year apprenticeship with a faculty member, continues through three courses in statistical analysis and research design, and ends in a dissertation on a topic related to the practice of psychology with children and families; students also pass master's-level comprehensive examinations and a doctoral qualifying examination, and receive a Master of Arts after two years.
Applicants may enter with a bachelor's degree or a master's degree in another area of psychology, and students who already hold a master's degree in school psychology may enter with advanced standing; the GRE is optional and an on-campus interview is required. Admission to the Psy.D. is limited to four students, and applications are due January 15. Full-time students entering the school psychology programs are granted a general graduate assistantship that requires five hours of work a week, a small number of competitive assistantships cover full tuition in the second and third years, and three or four incoming students receive first-year doctoral fellowships. The school says the program is approved by the State of New York as licensure-qualifying training that meets the educational requirements for the license in psychology, and notes that graduates who practice in schools do not need a license but become certified as school psychologists under state education regulations.
