UIndy's Clinical Psychology Doctorate (PsyD) follows a practitioner-scholar model of training for general clinical practice and is a 111-credit-hour program typically completed in five years including internship; students who enter without an MA can earn one along the way, which raises the total to 120 credit hours. Courses are taught in a traditional classroom setting, and finishing in the minimum time means attending full-time during the academic year and summers. Students complete at least 1,200 hours of practicum, in at least two training sites with a minimum of twelve hours a week on site and a weekly practicum seminar at the university, then a one-year, full-time internship of 2,000 hours at an approved health service training program site. Graduation also requires two comprehensive exams (the Core Curriculum Exam and the Psychotherapy Proficiency Exam) and a dissertation with an oral defense, all within seven years of admission. Students may choose one of seven optional concentrations, each a nine-credit-hour sequence taken in the third year: adult psychopathology and psychotherapy, childhood and adolescent psychology, community psychology and social change, generalist, health psychology and behavioral medicine, neuropsychology, or psychological assessment.
Applicants need a bachelor's degree, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 preferred, and at least 18 hours of undergraduate or graduate psychology courses; the program encourages applicants to submit GRE scores, and selected applicants are invited to predominantly in-person interviews. New students begin each fall, with a priority deadline of November 1 and a final deadline of December 1, and up to 15 graduate credit hours may transfer from another institution. Students are typically expected to take a full academic load, but a limited number who could not otherwise attend may be admitted part-time. Each year four or five incoming students receive assistantships, which typically run up to three academic years, involve 11 hours of work a week and cover about one-fourth of tuition, and the Excellence in Academic Performance Fellowship and the Community Service and Engagement Fellowship each cover full tuition for graduate coursework. UIndy says the program is designed to meet the academic requirements for licensure as a clinical psychologist and qualifies graduates to apply for practice as Health Service Providers in Psychology in the State of Indiana, and that it cannot confirm the degree meets every state's requirements; licensure is granted by each state's psychology board.
