IUP's program follows the local clinical scientist model of training, which the department describes as a bridge between the science of psychology and the realities of working in a clinical setting. Students see clients from the first year, begin an internal practicum in the department's training clinics at the Center for Applied Psychology in the second year, sit for the Comprehensive Clinical Examination at the end of the second year and the Clinical Proficiency Examination at the end of the third, and typically start an external practicum at a local agency, hospital or clinic in the third year. Students complete at least 1,000 hours of supervised practicum before internship, most defend their dissertation proposals between the third and fourth years, and the fifth year is typically a paid, full-time, 12-month predoctoral internship; students earn a master's degree in clinical psychology along the way.
IUP accepts students with a bachelor's or a master's degree. Applicants need prior research experience and some clinical exposure, and those whose degree is in a field other than psychology need at least 18 college-level psychology credits, including abnormal psychology, personality and research or statistics. The program is full time, year-round and residential in Indiana, Pennsylvania, cannot be completed part time or remotely, and looks to enroll about 15 new students each year. IUP says graduates complete the academic requirements toward licensure in Pennsylvania; the licensure exam and postdoctoral supervised experience are not part of the program.
- The program requires at least 99 semester hours of graduate-level course credit.
- Graduate assistantships, historically provided in each of the first three years, commonly trade 8 or 10 hours of work a week for a tuition waiver and a small stipend.
- Classes generally take place during the day, with occasional evening responsibilities.
- Applications are due December 1, and all incoming students enter in the fall semester.
