The Doctorate of Psychology in Clinical Psychology follows the practitioner-scholar (Vail) model and trains culturally and ethically competent generalists, with an emphasis on rural and underserved communities and placement sites that serve Native American, Hispanic, Veteran, student and other rural populations. It is a 5-year, full-time, in-residence day program: the first four years combine full-time coursework with at least 10 hours a week of practicum at community sites, and the fifth year is spent at a full-time internship site away from SUU. The degree totals 104 credit hours, including 25 credit hours of clinical practicum and 5 credit hours of a Doctoral Research Project, which students defend orally, along with a Clinical Competency Qualifying Examination with a written submission and an oral defense.

Each year 10 students are admitted; applicants need a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and those with a degree in a field other than psychology must score at least at the 50th percentile on the GRE Psychology Subtest or the Psychology Major's Field Test, while recent psychology graduates need no GRE scores and the FAQ asks the same test of applicants whose psychology degree is more than 10 years old. A master's degree is not required, and transfer credit may lighten a semester but will not shorten the program. The program says each student is expected to receive a graduate assistantship, a 20 hour weekly on-campus work commitment with a full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend, for the first four years, though funding is contingent on university and legislative support; students pay tuition for internship credit in their 5th year and all student fees. Applications for the next cohort are due December 1, 2026.
