WSPP follows the Vail Model's practitioner-scholar approach, with practicing clinical psychologists as instructors and role models, and offers the Psy.D. with areas of specialization in child or adult clinical psychology. The first year builds a foundation in theory and science, with practicum beginning after the first summer; the second year stresses assessment, intervention and research skills; the third applies advanced clinical skills and includes defending a dissertation proposal; and the fourth advances the dissertation and prepares students for internship. Students accumulate at least 2,000 hours of supervised practicum, see clients through the school's Psychology Center, earn a non-terminal master's degree after passing the Preliminary Examination, pass an oral Comprehensive Examination and finish with a 2,000-hour internship served full time in one year.
Applicants need a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited school with prior coursework in introductory psychology, statistics, research methods and design, developmental psychology and abnormal psychology, and the school welcomes applicants who already hold a master's degree in psychology or a related mental health field. First-year required courses meet during the day, Monday through Thursday, while later required courses meet once a week in the evening; students may attend full or part time but must finish within seven years. Class size rarely exceeds 20 students, no more than 18 credit hours may be transferred, and the school offers practicum-liaison assistantships paid in partial tuition waivers along with several scholarships.
- The degree is a five-year full-time course of study beyond the bachelor's degree, with the fifth year for internship and dissertation.
- Students may attend full time or part time and must finish within seven years.
