Rivier's Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Counseling and School Psychology is a combined doctoral program designed to integrate the two practice areas, and it follows the practitioner-scholar model, which pairs clinical skills in assessment, diagnosis, treatment and consultation with the empirical foundations of the discipline. Students complete foundation coursework, core and elective doctoral courses, at least six practicum experiences in school, community mental health, outpatient and hospital-based placements, written and oral comprehensive examinations, a written doctoral research project with a defense, and a 2,000-hour internship. The program includes a three-year academic residency at Rivier, and the number of credit hours a student needs depends on the graduate coursework already completed; the program page puts the range at 60 to 130 credits. Rivier says its curriculum meets New Hampshire's licensing requirements for psychologists and that another state's board decides whether it meets that state's; licensure itself is granted by each state's psychology board.

Applicants need a master's degree in psychology from an accredited institution, and the catalog adds that students with a bachelor's degree can be provisionally admitted to the doctorate in a future year once they complete Rivier's master's in psychology. Applications go through PSYCAS by December 1 for a fall start, with interviews in January and February. Students attend full time through the fall, spring and summer semesters and do not work more than 20 hours a week. Courses generally meet on weekdays in the late afternoons and evenings, with some daytime classes one day a week, and students must be on campus in Nashua, New Hampshire, on one established day each week for classes, examinations, research defenses and professional development events; a limited set of courses, mainly foundation courses, is online, in keeping with New Hampshire's requirement that teaching be predominantly face-to-face.

Does New Hampshire Require an APA-Accredited PsyD?

No. The statute, RSA 329-B:15, looks for a doctorate from a regionally accredited school, and the board’s rule treats an APA-accredited program as meeting the education requirement without further documentation. A program without APA or CPA accreditation must show that its graduate study was completed in residence, and residency models built on videoconferencing are not accepted.

Which Exams Does a New Hampshire Psychologist Take?

The EPPP and the board’s jurisprudence examination, both listed on the board’s application checklist. The jurisprudence exam covers RSA 329-B and the board’s rules, is open book and needs a score of at least 80 percent. A candidate can be approved for the EPPP once the application is complete and at least 200 postdoctoral hours are done.
