EPPP Results for PsyD Schools by Type and Specialty
EPPP results are the share of a school’s first-time test takers who passed the licensing exam, and ASPPB publishes them for accredited doctoral programs. This post counts them for 93 PsyD programs, using ASPPB’s first-time takers from 2021 to 2025, and says what the figures can and cannot show.
EPPP Results at a Glance
- The median PsyD program passed 68.0% of its first-time takers. That is below ASPPB’s 75% for all accredited doctoral programs, and it is this site’s own arithmetic, because ASPPB publishes no figure by degree.
- 29 of 93 programs are at or above 75%. 10 are at 90% or higher, and 28 are below 60%.
- 8,240 first-time takers are counted. A program needs at least five takers to show a rate, as ASPPB prints it.
- ASPPB says to take care in comparing schools. Its caution is quoted below, and the ranking weighs the pass rate as one input among several.

What EPPP Results Measure
The Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology, the EPPP, is the licensing exam of ASPPB, the association of state and provincial psychology boards. ASPPB says: “All of our 66 member jurisdictions require the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP)®.” It publishes the results of each accredited doctoral program’s first-time takers every year. The result used here is the share of a program’s first-time takers from 2021 to 2025 who scored at or above the recommended passing score. ASPPB puts it this way: “The recommended passing score for EPPP (Part 1–Knowledge) is 500.”
ASPPB’s report includes doctoral programs accredited by APA and by the Canadian Psychological Association, PhD and PsyD alike, and labels each row by program and degree. This post keeps the 93 ranked PsyD programs that have five or more first-time takers. Because the pass rate is one of the two parts of the outcomes factor, which carries 15 points of the ranking, the methodology page sets out how it is used.
EPPP Results Across PsyD Schools
ASPPB reports 18,941 first-time takers from all accredited doctoral programs, with a pass rate of 75%, and 2,095 from nonaccredited or other doctoral programs, with a pass rate of 38.9%. Among the 93 PsyD programs counted here, the median pass rate is 68.0%, below 75%. 29 programs are at or above 75% and 64 are below it. The table groups the programs by rate.
| Pass rate | Programs | Share of programs |
|---|---|---|
| 90% or higher | 10 | 11% |
| 80% to 89.9% | 11 | 12% |
| 70% to 79.9% | 17 | 18% |
| 60% to 69.9% | 27 | 29% |
| Below 60% | 28 | 30% |
EPPP Results by Specialty and School Type
EPPP results also differ by the kind of program. Medians are shown for each group with at least three programs. They are this site’s own medians of the rates ASPPB prints, so a group is described by its programs’ middle rate and not by a pooled pass rate of its takers.
| APA area | Programs | Median pass rate |
|---|---|---|
| Clinical Psychology | 64 | 69.6% |
| Counseling Psychology | 11 | 53.1% |
| School Psychology | 10 | 64.3% |
| Clinical and School Psychology | 7 | 74.7% |
| Type of school | Programs | Median pass rate |
|---|---|---|
| Private nonprofit | 72 | 65.3% |
| Public | 17 | 75.5% |
| Private for-profit | 4 | 46.7% |

What EPPP Results Do Not Tell You
“Please note that care should be exercised if comparisons across schools and programs are made. If performance on the EPPP (Part 1-Knowledge) is seen as an outcome measure of a school or program, it should be viewed as only one such measure.”
ASPPB, EPPP Scores by Doctoral Program, 2026 edition
Two more notes from ASPPB’s report bear on how to read a program’s rate. ASPPB says: “School/Program names are based solely on the information candidates enter during EPPP registration.” It adds: “Score data are not reflective of candidates’ school year or graduation year.” That means a program’s row is built from what takers wrote when they registered for the exam. And ASPPB’s own foreword gives the limit on the smallest programs: “Where the number of candidates tested per program is four or fewer, neither the number tested nor the pass rate is shown.”
The pass rate describes first-time takers in a window of years. It does not say how a particular student will do, how the program teaches or how long a graduate waits to test. Read EPPP results with the number of takers beside them, as the table above does, and read them as one measure among several.
Questions About EPPP Results for PsyD Schools
What Do the EPPP Results Look Like for a Typical PsyD Program?
The median of the 93 PsyD programs ASPPB reports is 68.0%, below ASPPB’s own 75% for all accredited doctoral programs, which covers 18,941 first-time takers. 29 of the 93 programs are at or above 75% and 64 are below it. ASPPB publishes no figure by degree, so the median is this site’s own arithmetic.
What Score Counts as Passing on the EPPP?
ASPPB says: “The recommended passing score for EPPP (Part 1–Knowledge) is 500.” A program’s result is the share of its first-time takers at or above that score. ASPPB’s report covers EPPP (Part 1-Knowledge) takers only.
Which Programs Are Included in ASPPB’s EPPP Results?
ASPPB’s foreword says: “The Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) is pleased to present the 27th edition of Psychology Licensing Exam Scores by Doctoral Program. It includes graduate doctoral training programs accredited by the American Psychological Association and the Canadian Psychological Association.” It also says: “This report includes data on first‐time takers who took the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology® (EPPP Part 1‐Knowledge) during the period from January 1, 2021, through December 31, 2025.” ASPPB adds: “Where the number of candidates tested per program is four or fewer, neither the number tested nor the pass rate is shown.”
Is the EPPP Changing?
Yes. ASPPB says: “The current EPPP (Part 1-Knowledge) and EPPP (Part 2-Skills) will remain available to all approved candidates until the integrated EPPP takes effect in the fourth quarter of 2027.” The pass rates here describe first-time takers on the current exam, from 2021 to 2025.
